Temporary Employment

CALBO is currently working with the League of California Cities to devise a new service to CALBO member jurisdictions that would place building officials in local departments on a temporary basis.

California’s local building departments have diversified needs, similar to all local jurisdictions. However, Building Officials must share a common background and familiarity with code enforcement and California’s Building Code by state law.

When a Building Official vacates a position, unless they are planning to retire, their move is usually to another local government position heading up a Building Department. However, many local jurisdictions do not have the skilled personnel or capacity to promote, even on an interim basis, a temporary manager for the Building Department. This can lead to a heavy backlog of work, which effects the construction, development and overall planning of the entire community that is to be served by the Building Department and city. Further, many City Managers and local government leaders do not know where to turn when it comes to finding an interim Building Official, seeing to it that the vital services performed by this city department continue in the absence of permanent management.

The program that CALBO is currently coordinating with the League of California Cities would be devised to assist local jurisdictions when scenarios, such as the one outlined above, come about. Under such circumstance, a local jurisdiction could contact CALBO, who would be able to furnish a list of available Building Officials willing to accept a temporary work assignment.

The logistics of this program are still being finalized, but CALBO hopes to launch it by the end of 2006 as a new and valuable service to our member jurisdictions.
