Building Safety Month
May, 2011
The California Building Officials (CALBO) and the International Code Council (ICC) would like to recognize the month of May 2011 as Building Safety Month. This year CALBO is not hosting its annual Leadership and Advocacy Day, so we would like to encourage our members to fully participate in California’s Building Safety Month.
CALBO has submitted a resolution to the Office of Governor Jerry Brown to proclaim May 2011 as the California Building Safety Month. We hope that your jurisdiction will submit a similar resolution/proclamation to declare May 2011 as your city’s or county’s Building Safety Month. A sample proclamation can be found here and under the Building Safety Month Toolkit link below.
During the month of May, each week will highlight a different aspect of building safety. Use the information found at the links below to creatively engage your community and educate them on not just the necessity of building safety, but the value of building departments. Most citizens to do not realize the vital role building departments play in their neighborhoods and workplaces; this is your opportunity to share your knowledge and importance.
Also, take time each week to hold a short educational program for your staff on the four topics below. Even a 15-minute refresher course on disaster preparedness (week 2) or swimming pool anti-entrapment devices (week 4) can be beneficial to your staff.
Let us join together to create awareness of the importance of building safety and the importance of building departments. This is your month to shine!
