The Building and Safety Division is responsible for reviewing plans, approving permits and providing inspections for construction projects in conformance with the California Building Codes including electrical, mechanical, plumbing, green building standards and energy as amended and adopted by the City of Berkeley codified in Chapter 19.28 of the Berkeley Municipal Code. The Division is also responsible for providing information, inspecting and managing various programs that mitigate seismic risk buildings in rental housing safety assessment. Minimum Requirements: Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school and completion of two (2) semesters of uniform building codes and one semester each of college level trigonometry and algebra AND Experience: Two (2) years as Building Inspector or Housing Inspector in a city government; OR Two (2) years in a related trade, plus at least one (1) year of plan checking experience; OR Two (2) years of plan checking experience comparable to the Permit Specialist; OR Completion of major coursework for an architectural degree, plus at least one (1) year of plan checking experience.
