Description: AI is showing up across building permitting, but “AI-powered” can mean very different things depending on the problem being solved. Some AI  tools help applicants submit permit-ready plans. Others support reviewers by accelerating plan review without compromising code compliance.

In this session, we take a practical look at the current AI landscape in building permitting through the lens of day-to-day operations. Using real-world examples, we break down the main categories of AI in use today, how they actually work, and where each fits in the permitting processing.

The discussion will center on:

  • The difference between applicant-facing tools versus AI-assisted plan review
  • Where AI can reduce plan review cycles and where it should not be applied
  • How to evaluate AI tools for transparency, accuracy, and defensibility in a regulatory environment
  • Understanding realistic time savings creating through the use of AI tools
  • Attendees will leave with a clear framework for assessing AI tools in the context of their department’s goals, staffing model, and compliance obligations.
