Fees for “Work Commenced Without Permit”

Post

Hello Colleagues,

Is anyone aware of any state statue limiting the “Fee” for work commenced without a building permit? I am aware of current Building/Residential Code provisions which delegates the fee amount to what has been established by the Building Official. Past practice has been similar to the 1997 UBC investigation fee equivalent to the permit fee, even if the permit is never issued, or 2 times the permit value. I believe those days are long past and contractors etc., rather ask for forgiveness after the fact (pay fee), rather than gain permission (application/permit) upfront. Less any statutory limitation in which I inquire from you, this fee is up for reconsideration.

Thanks in advance for your time and any thoughts you may have or sharing what your jurisdiction has done to curb this ongoing and pervasive issue.
