What’s Ahead for CALBO – A Special Message from CALBO’s President
Dear CALBO Friends and Colleagues,
What a busy and rewarding Spring it has been! It was wonderful seeing so many of you at the multi-chapter meetings in Santa Cruz and Los Angeles during Building Safety Month. Connecting with members across the state is always an inspiring reminder of the strength, expertise, and dedication of our building safety community.
Since I stepped into the role of President, CALBO has hit the ground running. We successfully hosted our 64th Annual Business Meeting in Santa Clara, welcomed 18 aspiring leaders into the Building Officials Leadership Academy (BOLA), launched registration for our signature Education Weeks, and continuously expanded our educational offerings and member resources. Having laid these successful foundations, we have so much to look forward to in the months ahead.
Building safety professionals, led by CALBO, continue to make their voices heard in Sacramento. Through our proactive advocacy efforts, our organization remains actively engaged on numerous legislative proposals impacting both our profession and the communities we protect. Just last month, members from across the state participated in our annual Leadership & Advocacy Day at the State Capitol. Our delegation met with more than 25 legislative offices to emphasize the vital role of local building departments and address essential issues affecting our industry. I encourage you to visit our Bill Report page to stay up to date on the legislation CALBO is tracking on your behalf.
As a member-driven organization, CALBO’s success relies on individuals who are willing to share their time, expertise, and unique perspectives. I am routinely asked, “How can I get more involved with CALBO?” If you have ever considered taking that next step, I strongly encourage you to explore serving on a CALBO Policy Committee. It is a fantastic opportunity to connect with peers and actively shape the future of our profession. Click here for the application.
A perfect example of our members making a tangible difference is the recently launched Career Resource Hub on the CALBO website. Developed through the dedicated efforts of our Professional Engagement Committee, this tool is designed for those seeking a professional change—including individuals transitioning due to trade injuries—or anyone searching for a lifelong career path. This resource provides excellent tools for professional growth while introducing the next generation to rewarding careers in building safety.
Another resource worth exploring is the new CALBO Online Portal at members.calbo.org. Designed as an all-in-one hub, the portal allows you to seamlessly register for courses, view training transcripts and attendance history, pay invoices online, browse active job postings, and access member resources. More features are already on the horizon, and if you haven’t explored the portal yet, I highly encourage you to log in.
Looking ahead, there are plenty of opportunities to continue learning and connecting. In addition to our summer webinars and On Demand offerings, we will once again host our hybrid Education Weeks this Fall in Burlingame and Costa Mesa. This year’s lineup features more than two dozen courses, including brand-new offerings for permit technicians, plan reviewers, inspectors, and structural professionals.
The Permit Technician Career Advancement Academy will also be held at both locations. Click here to learn more about this annual program designed to strengthen the technical and interpersonal skills of counter staff, enhancing both daily building department operations and professional growth.
Before the busy Fall season arrives, I hope you will take some well-deserved time to enjoy the great state we call home. California offers no shortage of places to explore, personal projects to tackle, and memories to make with family. Fall will be here before we know it, and I look forward to seeing many of you at Education Weeks and industry events around the state.
Sincerely,
Mike Brinkman
Welcome, BOLA Class of 2026-2027!
Congratulations for completing the Academy Core Curriculum Week in Sacramento.

Since its inception over a decade ago, there have been over six dozen graduates, many of whom have become building officials or directors in their jurisdictions.
The current BOLA cohort completed their core curriculum week from May 4-8, 2026 in Sacramento, engaging in five days of intensive coursework covering administration, legislation, leadership, communication, budgeting, and more.

Your Fall Roadmap with CALBO – A Special Message from CALBO’s President
Dear CALBO Friends and Colleagues,
It’s hard to believe summer is already winding down. With that, I hope you’ve had a chance to enjoy some of what makes California so special – whether that meant exploring our famed towns, spending time on our iconic coastline, or relaxing with family in your own backyard, it’s important to hit pause when we can.
While summer may offer a chance to recharge, things haven’t slowed down for CALBO. Our Legislative Team has remained active and has been keeping a close eye on the final stretch of this year’s legislative session. As we all know, AB 130 – the budget trailer bill that contained the provisions from AB 306 and AB 750, has been on all our minds. Without question, this bill is a headache – but not just for local building departments. CALBO has continued to work directly with our state agency regulatory partners and implementation guidelines. These will hopefully be available in the immediate weeks ahead from the California Building Standards Commission. Please stay tuned. If you haven’t yet caught Matt Wheeler’s monthly legislative briefings, I encourage you to check them out. They’re a great way to stay current with legislative proposals – especially during this big year for housing legislation. Click here to view them.
Looking ahead, I hope you’ll join us this fall for CALBO’s Education Weeks in Burlingame and/or Costa Mesa. Whether you’re planning to attend in person or joining us virtually, we’ve worked hard to ensure the experience is well worth your time. For our virtual participants, live facilitators will be available to answer questions in real time. And if you’re attending in person, I encourage you to take a few moments during the breaks to connect with our industry partners and explore the latest innovations and services. You can find more details and registration information here.
Another exciting offering this fall is the Permit Technician Career Advancement Academy, now entering its third year. This leadership resource was created by CALBO to strengthen the professional development of our counter technicians – those who play a vital role in building department operations. On a side note, this academy and CALBO offering is particularly personal to me as I have been an active participant in its development. With demand growing, we’re once again offering the Academy in both Burlingame and Costa Mesa. A few spots are still available in each location – click here for more information.
Of course, none of this happens without the hard work and dedication of many individuals. I want to thank the California Training Institute (CTI) Commissioners for putting together a strong lineup of courses, as well as our instructors, facilitators and moderators who make the learning experience a valuable one. And of course, a special thanks to our sponsors and exhibitors for your continued support year after year at our annual training events.
Looking for additional professional development in the coming months? Visit the CALBO calendar for the latest on all our current events, including the 64th Annual Business Meeting in Santa Clara (San Jose area), April 12-16, 2026. Mark your calendars for this and stay tuned for more details. Or better yet, if you have a programming idea for the meeting, please email it to info@calbo.org by September 2.
As always, thank you for the work you do every day to protect our communities and to elevate our profession. I look forward to seeing many of you this fall on the road. Don’t hesitate to stop me in the hallways and say hello – I’m easy to find.
Sincerely,
Raj Patel
